Summary

By examining key biblical texts, especially Luke-Acts, Paul, John and 1 Peter, Gaventa aims "to learn what conversion and transformation meant in the contexts of first-century Christianity and to compare that with understandings of being 'born again.'"  She studies the function of conversion language and conversion narratives from the perspective of comparative religion and social psychology.  She proposes a threefold typology of personal change - alternation, conversion, transformation - for understanding conversion both in the first century and today.
