James L. Crenshaw carefully analyzes the sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22), Job, the Confessions of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Psalm 73 -- biblical texts in which the notion of divine testing plays a central part.  These and related texts suggest that divine presence in ancient Israel was often perceived negatively.  This critique of the normative faith of Israel suggests an alternative to the covenantal-credal model of Old Testament theology by considering the realities of human pain, doubt, and negativity.
